Steven Levitt Headshot

Steven Levitt

Economist & Author or Freakonomics

When mild-mannered economist Steven D. Levitt published a paper linking a rise in abortion to a drop in crime, it set off a firestorm of controversy and had both the conservatives and liberals up in arms. But Levitt has no political agenda and is the last person to be called a moralist. He is a brilliant but uncomplicated man who uses simple questions to reach startling conclusions.  The Wall Street Journal   has said ?If Indiana Jones were an economist, he'd be Steven Levitt,? he has shown other economists just how well their tools can make sense of the real world.

Outliers: The Story Of Success

Speaker: Malcolm Gladwell, Author of five New York Times bestsellers,  The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, What the Dog Saw , and now, his latest,  David and Goliath:Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants .

Malcolm Gladwell

“Success is a function of persistence and doggedness and the willingness to work hard for twenty two minutes to make sense of something that most people would give up on after thirty seconds.” Malcolm Gladwell

In this keynote, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers" - the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? The sense of possibility so necessary for success comes not just from inside us or from our parents. It comes from our time; from the particular opportunities that our particular place in history presents us with.”

His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band.

Outliers illuminates secret patterns behind everyday phenomena. His gift for spotting an intriguing mystery, luring the reader in, then gradually revealing his lessons in lucid prose, is on vivid display. A detailed investigation of the unique culture and skills of Eastern European Jewish immigrants persuasively explains their rise in 20th-century New York, first in the garment trade and then in the legal profession. Through case studies ranging from Canadian junior hockey champions to the robber barons of the Gilded Age, from Asian math whizzes to software entrepreneurs to the rise of his own family in Jamaica, Gladwell tears down the myth of individual merit to explore how culture, circumstance, timing, birth and luck account for success - and how historical legacies can hold others back despite ample individual gifts.

The Hidden Meaning of Everything

Speaker: Steven Levitt, Co-Author of  Freakonomics , SuperFreakonomics,  Think Like A Freak and When To Rob a Bank

Steven Levitt Headshot

“Morality, it could be argued, represents the way that people would like the world to work, whereas economics represents how it actually does work.” Steven Levitt

In this keynote, Steven Levitt demonstrates how conventional wisdom is often wrong and will change the way you see your world – making you question how much you trust your prejudices or the easy option of open-and-shut thinking. Freakonomics is the study of economics based on the principle of incentives. Levitt takes a novel approach to studying economics, sharing its most interesting research and discussing the individual concepts of his book.

Levitt is happy to take a hard look at facts: he is not only interested in the numbers, but how we might prefer to interpret them. His insights are immediately insightful and practicable to businesses as he masterfully breaks these concepts down into the minute examination of circumstances, the world boiled down to actuarial tables. The application of Freakonomics to the corporate world will be eye-opening and have you rethinking your approach to problem-solving.
